Kids and Cops Program Sponsors Annual Baseball Camp

May 13, 2010: The Delray Beach Police Department will hold its Annual Baseball Camp on June 9, 10 and 11, 2010, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, at Pompey Park, 1101 NW 2nd Street. The three (3) day camp is free for boys and girls ages 8 to 12 years. Registration deadline is May 21st.

The camp is limited to 60 children so early registration is recommended. Camp participants are requested to bring baseball equipment with them. Each child will receive a free t-shirt and lunch will be provided all three days.

Delray Beach Police Officers and volunteers from the local high school baseball team will instruct participants in hitting and fielding drills. Groups and teams will be formed based on age.

Road Alert! I-95 Road Work Advisory

May 14, 2010: The Florida Department of Transportation has advised that three (3) northbound inside lanes of I-95, including the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, will be closed 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., Tuesday, May 18th, and Wednesday, May 19th, from Congress Avenue in Delray Beach to Boynton Beach Boulevard in Boynton Beach. Three (3) southbound inside lanes of I-95, including the HOV lane, will be closed, 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., Thursday, May 20, and Monday, May 24, from Woolbright Road, in Boynton Beach to Congress Avenue in Delray Beach.

City Seeks Support for Google Fiber Project Through Online Survey

May 10, 2010: Google plans to develop ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country with fiber cabling directly to homes. One of the objectives for the project is to discover what types of new applications can be developed with this type of high speed network. Google will fund the installation of the project and offer Internet access at market rates. Google will also open up their network to other providers.

Google issued a Request for Information (RFI) to allow interested communities to participate in the project. The City of Delray Beach submitted a response to the RFI. By the end of the year, Google plans to announce the selected community (or communities) for the project.

The City has created an online survey to gauge community support for the City's response to the RFI. The survey is comprised of three (3) questions and includes an area for comments on the project (optional). Boys & Girls Club Celebrates 3rd Annual "Love to Read Day"

May 10, 2010: The City of Delray Beach Mayor's Literacy Initiative will host the 3rd Annual "Love to Read Day" at the Naoma Donnelly Haggin Boys & Girls Club, 1451 SW 7th Street, on Friday, May 21, 2010, from 3:00 pm until 4:30 pm. Mayor Nelson S. "Woodie" McDuffie will welcome guests and join in the event's activities.

Special guest WPTV Meteorologist Keenan Smith will participate in this year's event and discuss the featured book "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" by Judi Barrett, an illustrated book about a small town where the weather comes at mealtime and always brings food and beverages!

"Love to Read Day" focuses on the importance of literacy in our community and cultivates the joy of reading in our youth. Volunteers are needed during the event to read to a child. May 7, 2010: Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce the annual Dad & Daughter Date Night.

On Friday, June 25th , from 7:00 to 10:30 pm. Dads and their special girls of all ages are invited to attend this celebration of Father's Day at the Delray Beach Golf Course. This elegant evening features a full-course dinner and music for your dancing and listening enjoyment. AND, as a memento of his special night, every Dad will receive a keepsake photo.

April 22, 2010: Delray Beach Parks & Recreation invites girls and boys ages 5 to 15 years old to join the "Let it Fly" 5-on-5 Flag Football league at Pompey Park. The league starts June 5th with two age divisions at Pompey Park Ball Fields, 1101 NW 2nd St., Delray Beach. It will run until July 31st Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at a cost of $25.00 per person for Delray Beach Residents and $30 for non-residents.

This is a non-contact sport and will provide an opportunity to develop the skills needed to participate in an organized tackle football league.

French Government Recognized for Honoring U.S. Veterans

April 20, 2010: The Cities of Delray Beach and Boynton Beach recognized the French Government at a special ceremony on April 15, 2010, at Abbey Delray, 2000 Lowson Blvd, Delray Beach. City of Delray Beach Mayor Nelson S. "Woodie" McDuffie and City of Boynton Beach Mayor Jose A. Rodriguez presented letters of appreciation to Consul General of France Gael de Maisonneuve for his country's observance of service by local veterans during World War II.

For several years, the French Government has honored the meritorious service of our armed forces by presenting the esteemed Legion of Honor medal to veterans who served France during the Second World War and received at least one Battle Star medal. This generous act not only acknowledges the loyal allegiance of U.S. armed forces during the war but also signifies the commitment of friendship between the two countries.

The City of Delray Beach invites the public to celebrate Earth Day/Arbor Day on Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, at Lakeview Park, 1100 Lake Drive.

The event is free and all are welcome to be a part of this eco-friendly event.

Representatives from the Community Improvement Department and Parks & Recreation will educate the community on "green" initiatives and recycling programs through fun activities and crafts.
Members from the Green Implementation Advancement Board will be available to discuss "green" issues.
8 trees will be planted to beautify our community and to recognize their value in maintaining the global environment.
Make plans to join the City in celebrating Earth Day/Arbor Day on April 24th.

Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for our global environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.

Arbor Day was conceived in the 1870s by Julius Sterling Morton, a Nebraska newspaper editor. Morton believed that planting trees would help beautify the state, provide shade, and prevent soil erosion by creating windbreaks. In 1872 he proposed a tree-planting day. Today, Arbor Day is observed in many countries throughout the world.

Community Invited to Observe 59th National Day of Prayer at Two Public Events
April 10, 2010: Two public prayer events will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010, in the City of Delray Beach to observe the 59th National Day of Prayer.

At noon, Delray Beach citizens will gather as they have for more than a decade in front of City Hall, 100 NW 1st Avenue. During this interdenominational gathering, the community is invited to join in prayer with civic and religious leaders, praying that God will continue to shed His grace on this nation. This year's theme is Prayer.For Such as Time as This.

Later that day, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, the Delray Beach Interfaith Clergy Association will hold "Many Paths - One God," a celebration of our "unity in diversity" at the Duncan Conference Center, 15820 S. Military Trail. Representatives from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Bahai, and Hindu faith traditions will offer prayers for peace. The Delray Beach Chorale (directed by Eric Keiper), Margaret Schmidt, Cantor, and Vocalist Kiskadee (Baha'i tradition) will provide music. People of all faiths are encouraged to attend.

In 1775, the Continental Congress issued a call to prayer in forming our nation. The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed by President Harry Truman. Summer Camp Registration is Now Open

April 8, 2010: The Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce Summer Camp Registration is now open!

Delray Beach Residents can register their child(ren) Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (NOON) and from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the Community Center, located at 50 NW 1st Ave., Delray Beach. Registration will be accepted for all three camp sites (Community Center, Pompey Park, and Pine Grove Elementary). Parents registering their child(ren) are required to bring:

A completed Registration Application
A $25.00 one time registration fee
First payment of $182.00 made by cash, check, Master Card or Visa
A headshot photograph of the child(ren)
A copy of the child(ren)'s birth certificate.

The City's Summer Camp program will be held from June 14th through August 6th, 2010. The total cost for this eight (8) week program will be $545.00 with a discount available for multiple children. Summer Camp fees must be paid by May 17th.

Delray Beach Historical Society Hosts Exhibit and Panel

Discussion on Architect Samuel Ogren at City Hall
April 8, 2010: The Delray Beach Historical Society (DBHS) will host a panel discussion on Delray Beach's first registered architect, Samuel Ogren, Sr., on Thursday, April 29, 2010, 6:30 pm, at City Hall, 100 NW 1st Avenue, in the Commission Chambers. Admission is free and the public is invited to experience the works of this talented architect.

During the discussion, panel members Jim Clark (Sam Ogren Sr.'s son-in-law), Architect Robert Currie, Architect Gary Eliopoulos and DBHS Archivist Dorothy Patterson will focus on the topic: Ogren's Designs of the Past-Planning for the Future.

An exhibit of Mr. Ogren's drawings is on display in the City Hall lobby through April 30th. For more information on the exhibit and/or panel discussion, please call (561) 274-9578.

About Samuel Ogren:
Samuel Ogren, Sr. is credited with being Delray's first registered architect and "Father of Delray Beach Architecture." He worked here from 1925 to 1950 and some of his outstanding designs still exist in the City such as the Sandoway House, Arcade Building, Old School Square's Gymnasium and 1926 High School. The exhibits were created from a collection of architectural drawings donated by the Ogren family to the Historical Society's archives.

This project is supported by grant awards from the Florida Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Delray Beach Historical Society was founded in 1964 to preserve local traditions and provide opportunities for the community to learn about Florida's heritage. The DBHS manages several sites in Delray Beach that enable it to educate the public regarding local history and preservation.

Skill Drill Basketball

April 9, 2010: Delray Beach Parks and Recreation presents the Skill Drill Basketball Program at Catherine Strong Park, 1500 SW 6th Street, for children ages 6 - 12 starting in April.

The Skill Drill Basketball program will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm beginning April 7th and ending May 12th, 2010. The cost for the six-week program is $20 for Delray Beach residents and $25 non-residents and covers all the supplies and equipment for the program.

The Skill Drill Basketball program is available for children ages 6 - 12 and will provide the opportunity for each child to be fit and learn basic fundamentals needed to compete in organized team basketball. A variety of innovative drills will be utilized to enhance basic motor skills, and it also helps children sharpen up their pre-existing skills.

Running for Fitness Program starts at Catherine Strong Park
April 6, 2010: Delray Beach Parks & Recreation and Catherine Strong Park will have a new fitness program to help the children develop the skills and exercises needed to be in the best shape they can be.

The Running for Fitness program will teach children proper running and endurance techniques as well as target areas on flexibility, muscular strength, and cardiovascular exercise. The program will consist of long-distance running as well as speed and skill testing.

Running for Fitness is open to boys and girls, ages 9 to 12 and will run from April 1st through June 17th on Thursdays from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The program consists of three 4-week sessions. The cost for each 4-week session is $20 for Delray Beach Residents and $25 for non-resident and will cover all the supplies and equipment needed for the program.

U.S. Census Plays Important Role in City's Future

April 5, 2010: In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses received a 2010 Census form by mail or hand delivery. The 2010 Census will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000, and will tell us how we've evolved as a country. Because census data affect how more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments, the census also will frame the future of our country and our community for the next 10 years. Here's what you should know about the 2010 Census:

It's easy. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. The individual in whose name the housing unit is rented or owned should complete the form on behalf of every person living there, both relatives and nonrelatives.

It's important. Census data are used to reapportion seats in Congress and ensure proper district representation in state and local governments. Information from the census helps determine locations for child-care and senior centers, new roads, hospitals, schools and community centers.

It's safe. By law, the U.S. Census Bureau cannot share respondents' answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. All Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data. The penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

The most efficient way to respond to the 2010 Census is to complete the form as soon as it arrives and return it in the postage-paid return envelope. Census workers will visit households that do not return forms to take the count in person.

CRA Drops Price on West Settler's Condos

March 31, 2010: The CRA Board voted to lower the listing price of four residential condominiums in the West Settler's Building, located at 135 NW 5th Avenue, to $73,000 at a board meeting on March 25th.

The two-bedroom, one-bathroom condos, originally listed at $100,000, are newly renovated. Each unit has tile flooring throughout, carpeted bedrooms, and comes with a washer and dryer, flat-top range, refrigerator, microwave and more.

"They're great condos, but the new price makes them more competitive with similar units on the market," said CRA Executive Director Diane Colonna. "The lower price also means that the buyer will end up with a much more affordable mortgage, which is what we want."

The West Settler's Building, named after the West Settler's historic district, is across the street from the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and a short distance from the downtown's shops and restaurants.

Homework Assistance at Catherine Strong Park

Year-Round Water Conservation Measures Protect South Florida's Water Resources

March 25, 2010: The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) initiated Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Conservation Measures on March 15, 2010. These measures adopt a proactive strategy to better protect South Florida's water resources for the long-term benefit of our environment.

Under the Conservation Measures, City of Delray Beach residents and businesses may opt to water three (3) days per week, replacing the previous two (2) day per week watering restriction. Although watering days have been increased, two (2) day-a-week irrigation is often more than enough for South Florida lawns and landscapes, which typically require only three-quarters to an inch of water per week.

Residents and businesses with an ODD-NUMBERED street address may water lawns and landscapes on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Saturdays, only before 10:00 am or after 4:00 pm.
Residents and businesses with an EVEN-NUMBERED street address, no street address or those that irrigate both even and odd addresses within the same zones, which may include multi-family units and homeowners associations, may water lawns and landscapes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Sundays, only before 10:00 am or after 4:00 pm.
Water irrigation will not be allowed on any day between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Irrigation using reclaimed water, rain harvesting systems and various low-volume methods - such as micro-irrigation, container watering and hand watering with a hose and automatic shut-off nozzle - may be conducted at any time.
Additional watering days are provided following the installation of new lawns and landscaping for up to ninety (90) days.
The SFWMD may grant variances for users of "smart" irrigation technologies as described in Senate Bill 494, passed by the Florida Legislature in 2009.
The Conservation Measures apply to all water from traditional sources, including water from public utilities, private wells, canals, ponds & lakes. Failure to observe Conservation Measures could result in fines starting at $100.

Boca Raton Aviation Advisory Committee
This Committee gives input regarding noise, noise mitigation and aircraft traffic patterns. Meetings are held every other month.

Nuisance Abatement Board
Members hear evidence relating to the existence of certain public nuisances on premises located in the City. Meetings are held on an as needed basis.

Delray GreenMarket 9th Annual Easter Bonnet Pet Parade

March 25, 2010: The Delray GreenMarket will host its 9th Annual Easter Bonnet Pet Parade on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Registration will begin at 9:00 am on the front lawn of Old School Square, 51 North Swinton Avenue. A suggested donation of $2 per registered pet will be collected to benefit the Animal Rescue Force. The parade will begin at 10:00 am and the event is free to watch!

This year, the Delray GreenMarket welcomes all domestic pets to participate in the parade. Local celebrity judges attired with top hats and canes will lead the procession east on the sidewalk of Atlantic Avenue to the GreenMarket, located along the street on SE 4th Avenue. Judging and prizes will be awarded based on a variety of categories including most original, traditional, funniest bonnets, most tropical, frou-frou and owner/pet look-a-like.

March 18, 2010: On Tuesday, March 2nd, four (4) Delray Beach firefighters and local Developer Frank McKinney were honored by the Delray Beach City Commission for their rescue efforts in Haiti. The Delray Beach firefighters, Chief Ed Crelin, Lieutenant Steve Moews, Lieutenant Ed Beardsley and Firefighter Greg Tabeek, were part of an eleven (11) person team assembled by Delray Beach Resident Frank McKinney. The Team was honored for its valiant efforts in saving three (3) earthquake victims from the rubble during the recent and tragic earthquake that has devastated Port Au Prince, Haiti.

Mayor McDuffie personally thanked each Delray Beach Team Member, including Mr. McKinney, and presented each of the Firefighters and Mr. McKinney with a certificate of appreciation from the City of Delray Beach. The City is proud to be a part of the Haitian rescue efforts. The Delray Beach Team Members did a great job and represented our community with class and true professionalism.

The Delray Beach Team arrived safely in Haiti just 48 hours after the earth quake and was immediately paired up Peruvian, Nicaraguan and Spanish search and rescue teams. Aided with UN security, the Team was able to begin search efforts almost immediately at sun rise the next morning. Despite the destruction and sadness around the city, there were still many Haitian residents in need of assistance. One such case involved the rescue of a mother and daughter out from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building, where victims were reported as trapped for over 12 hours.

During their 2nd day in Port Au Prince, the Team was tired but determined. After driving up and down the streets of for several hours, another search team was in desperate need of a vehicle and driver for the victim they successfully removed from a housing complex. Immediately, Frank McKinney volunteered to transport the patient to the makeshift hospital at the airport. While en route to the hospital, medic crews from West Palm Beach Fire-Rescue and Colorado began treating the patient. When they arrived at the hospital the patient was able to speak and thank the crew for their efforts.

With the window closing on survivability four (4) days after the earthquake, the Team was flagged down by a member of the humanitarian effort known as "Doctors without Borders." The doctor explained that their hospital was completely destroyed and a patient was buried beneath the rubble.but, alive. With hand tools and hard work, the Delray Beach Team safely removed the victim in just under three (3) hours and saved his life.

March 19, 2010: Delray Beach Parks and Recreation is excited to invite our community youth (ages 5 to 15 years old) to register for City's 2010 Spring Break Skate Camp. This interactive camp is geared for beginner and advanced skaters and will be held from March 26th to April 2nd - 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (NOON) - at the City's "505" Teen Center and Hobbit Skate Park.

This one (1) week camp will include evaluations, skill development/enhancement, drills and free skate. Participants are required to bring their own skateboard and must wear a strapped helmet. Knee and elbow pads are recommended.

Registration is open to all City residents and non-residents. You can sign up for this exciting Spring Break Skating Camp daily (Monday - Friday) from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. (NOON) until 9:00 p.m. at the at the "505" Teen Center, which is located at 505 SE 5th Ave., Delray Beach The cost to register is $20 per person per day for Delray Beach Residents, and $25.00 per person per day for non-residents.

Beach Area Master Plan Charrette Planned for March 24

March 22, 2010: The City of Delray Beach and the Beach Property Owners' Association are sponsoring a Beach Area Master Plan Charrette on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the upstairs meeting room of Northern Trust Bank, 770 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach (south side of Atlantic Ave., just west of the intracoastal bridge). The overall goal of the Master Plan is to improve and enhance the look and feel of this very important and visible part of Delray Beach.

The Beach Area Master Plan is intended to provide direction in establishing a sense of place and community through design elements, reflect the unique character of the beach neighborhood and complement the natural beach environment. Specific areas to be covered during the charrette will include ongoing maintenance, landscaping, anticipated replacement and upgrades, and future improvements and new features. The Beach Area Master Plan will serve as a guide for key decisions related to the beach and surrounding areas.

The charrette will provide attendees with an opportunity to examine, discuss and make recommendations regarding various aspects of the Beach area, including, but not limited to, Ocean Boulevard/A1A sidewalk, lighting, landscaping, public amenities, public parks and other streetscape issues.

Youth Track and Field Program races to Delray Beach Parks and Recreation

March 2, 2010: Registration is now open for the Delray Beach Track Club! This program will introduce and teach girls and boys, ages 6 thru 18, the sport of track and field. Starting March 8th, practices will be held at Atlantic High School on Mondays through Thursdays from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with competitions on Saturdays. Registration is now being held at Pompey Park, 1101 NW 2nd Street, Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 am until 9:00 pm, Saturdays from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm and on Sundays from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at a cost of $35.00 per person for Delray Beach Residents and $40.00 for non-residents.

Start Smart Sports Development Program for Pre-School Age Children starts at Catherine Strong Park
February 25, 2010: The City of Delray Beach is proud to announce the start of the Start Smart Sports Development Program at Catherine Strong Park, 1500 SW 6th St. This new program teaches parents the proper way to assist their children in developing athletic skills in soccer, basketball, baseball, football, tennis and golf. This program also educates parents on how to instill and build their child(ren)'s confidence while learning about these various sports.

The Start Smart Sports Development Program is open to youngsters (ages three to five) whose parent(s) and/or guardian(s) is(are) able to attend four, one-hour sessions. Each month we will feature a new sport. The cost this 4-week program is $20 for Delray Beach residents and $25 for non-residents. All the supplies and equipment needed for the program are included in this cost.

The program, which is administered by the Youth Development Arm of the nonprofit National Alliance for Youth Sports, utilizes a variety of innovative products to enhance the child(ren)'s development.

CRA Wants Artists and Art Groups in Downtown Retail Space

February 17, 2010: The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has issued a Request for Proposals to sublease the retail space on the ground floor of the Old School Square public parking garage, located at the intersection of NE 2nd Avenue and NE 1st Street in downtown Delray Beach.

The CRA is looking for nonprofit artists and cultural based organizations that can promote cultural tourism, enhance the city's identity as a cultural arts community, create jobs, and help generate pedestrian activity along Pineapple Grove Way. Up to six artists or organizations may be chosen to occupy a portion of the approximately 10,000 square-foot space that the CRA is leasing from the City of Delray Beach.

Proposed art usages may include, but are not limited to, performance, dance, music, multimedia, film and visual art. Proposals are due to the CRA office by 2 p.m. on March 30th.

Wayne Barton Study Center Sponsors Food Giveaway

Few Openings Available for Residents Academy Spring Session 2010

February 11, 2010: Limited openings are still available for the Residents Academy Spring Session 2010, a very popular and widely recognized program that educates the public on City government operations, facilities and responsibilities. The Academy begins on March 4th at the Environmental Services Administration Building, located at 434 South Swinton Avenue, and will meet on Thursday evenings for six (6) consecutive weeks from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

All City residents, 18 years of age and older, are eligible to attend the Residents Academy at no charge. The City only asks for a commitment to complete the scheduled sessions.

By the end of the semester, graduates will have an increased understanding of the operations and services that are provided by all City departments and impact our quality of life. At the conclusion of the Academy, Mayor Nelson "Woodie" McDuffie will present a certificate of completion to each participating resident at a City Commission meeting.

About Samuel Ogren:
Samuel Ogren, Sr. is credited with being Delray's first registered architect and "Father of Delray Beach Architecture." He worked here from 1925 to 1950 and some of his outstanding designs still exist in the City such as the Sandoway House, Arcade Building, Old School Square's Gymnasium and 1926 High School. The exhibits were created from a collection of architectural drawings donated by the Ogren family to the Historical Society's archives.

The Delray Beach Historical Society was founded in 1964 to preserve local traditions and provide opportunities for the community to learn about Florida's heritage. The DBHS manages several sites in Delray Beach that enable it to educate the public regarding local history and preservation.

"A Night of Magic" Benefits Delray Beach Schools

Bragging Rights at Stake in 13th Annual Chili Cook-Off

February 4, 2010: Chopped onions, chili powder and a generous portion of fun make for a wonderful recipe at this year's Annual Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Delray GreenMarket, located along the street on SE 4th Avenue, just south of Atlantic Avenue. Veteran and novice chefs are invited to take up their ladles from 10:00 am until noon to flaunt their culinary talents. Tasting is always free and chili lovers will delight in the assortment of homemade recipes.

The Chili Cook-Off gains popularity with locals and out-of-towners each year. From Traditional to Vegetarian, entries are sampled and voted on by judges and market goers. Competition is fierce as cooks vie for the Chef's Choice and the People's Choice awards. Trophies and bragging rights are awarded to winners for their creative concoctions in a variety of categories.

The GreenMarket offers the finest in produce, baked goods, flowers, plants and organic foods every Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Weekly musical entertainment and special events occur at this outdoor market through May 2010.

CRA Issues Call to Artists for Public Plaza

February 4, 2010: The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the design of a sculpture or artistic element for the public plaza currently under construction at the intersection of West Atlantic and SW 5th Avenues.

The CRA is seeking an art component that will further Delray's rich artistic traditions while reflecting the history and cultural heritage of Historic Fifth Avenue, an area originally settled by African Americans. The component should also compliment the design elements in the plaza's overall design. The CRA has allocated $15,000 toward the art feature.

Qualified individual artists and artistic teams are invited to apply. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and preference will be given to artists who reside in Palm Beach County. Applications and proposals will be reviewed by a selection committee as well as the Public Arts Advisory Board, who will make recommendations to the CRA Board. The final selection will be made by the CRA Board.

January 27, 2010: The City of Delray Beach is accepting applications for the spring session of the very popular and widely recognized Residents Academy which educates the public on City government operations, facilities and responsibilities. The Academy begins on March 4th at the Environmental Services Administration Building, located at 434 South Swinton Avenue and will meet on Thursday evenings for six (6) consecutive weeks from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

All City residents, 18 years of age and older, are eligible to attend this program at no charge. The City only asks for a commitment to complete the scheduled sessions.

By the end of the semester, graduates will have an increased understanding of the operations and services that are provided by all City departments and impact our quality of life. At the conclusion of the Academy, Mayor Nelson "Woodie" McDuffie will present a certificate of completion to each participating resident at a City Commission meeting.

City of Delray Beach Teams Up With a Public Relations Firm and a Haitian American Business to aide in disaster relief for Haiti.

January 21, 2010: Genesis Marketing and Promotions, LLC d/b/a the Genesis Media Group, a public relations and sports marketing firm, World Vibe Entertainment, a graphic design and printing company and the City of Delray Beach have joined together to assist in the disaster relief efforts for earthquake ravaged Haiti.

The Event

On Sunday January 31st, Catherine Strong park, located at 1500 S.W 6th Street in Delray Beach, will host "THE DRIVE FOR HAITI", festive event aimed at generating much needed resources that will be shipped to Haiti to continue worldwide humanitarian efforts after the 7.0 earth that has all but destroyed the already poverty stricken company. "THE DRIVE FOR HAITI" will begin at 11:00 am and end 6:00 pm. There will be live entertainment from the various groups in the Haitian-American community, with the entertainment aimed at lifting morale while contributing to the relief efforts.

"We urge donors to come out and assist us with this well needed project" says Abby Murrell, Recreation Supervisor II at Catherine Strong Park. "The City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Departments is deeply saddened by this tragedy and will do as much as it can to lend its assistance".

9th Annual Clash on the Clay Tennis Classic

January 20, 2010: The South Florida Rainbow Tennis Association (SFRTA), a multicultural nonprofit and charitable organization dedicated to increasing minority involvement in tennis, presents the 9th Annual "Clash on the Clay" Tennis Classic from February 5 - 7, 2010, at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, 201 West Atlantic Avenue. Proceeds benefit youth sports programs that help build character, pride, sportsmanship and leadership.

Tennis matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, February 5th. On Saturday, February 6th, early morning tennis action starts at 8:00 am with Kids' Day activities from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Semi-finals and finals will be held on Sunday, February 7th, beginning at 9:00 am.

SFRTA is seeking participants for singles and doubles matches. January 20, 2010: The 2010 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) will celebrate its 12th year in Delray Beach with two main events - the ATP World Tour and the ATP Champions Tour - at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center, 201 West Atlantic Avenue, from February 20th - 28th.

2010 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships ATP World Tour
James Blake, Mardy Fish, Tommy Haas and the Bryan Brothers will be featured with other top-ranked ATP World Tour players in a 32-player field that will provide spectators with exceptional tennis action beginning Monday, February 23rd. Weekday main draw matches will begin at 11:00 am and 5:30 pm. Semifinals will be played on Saturday, February 27th at Noon and 7:00 pm. Finals are scheduled for Sunday, February 28th, beginning at 1:00 pm.

For the first time, the ATP Champions Tour comes to the United States and will be held simultaneously with the ATP World Tour. Annual Citizen's Roundtable: A Community Conversation

Come join in the Annual Citizen's Roundtable: A Community Conversation on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Crest Theatre at Old School Square, 51 North Swinton Avenue.

The evening will begin with presentations from the Delray Beach Planning and Zoning Board, the Community Redevelopment Agency and the City's Administration.

Immediately following the opening presentations, citizens are invited to participate in a unique community conversation that will take place in the Old School Square Gymnasium. During this conversation we will explore major issues (i.e. quality of life, financial condition of City) on the minds of Delray Beach citizens.

The goal is to build consensus and a shared understanding for the future of our City. All participants will have a voice during the dialogue and you will be able to connect with your fellow citizens. This new and innovative format can help us, as a community, identify new opportunities and solutions to existing problems.

Firefighters Arrive in Haiti to Assist with Emergency Earthquake Rescue

Assist with Emergency Earthquake Rescue Efforts
January 15, 2010: In an effort to assist the citizens of Haiti that have been affected by the horrific and devastating earthquake that took place on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the City of Delray Beach has sent four (4) Firefighter's to assist with rescue, life saving and relief efforts.

The Special Operations Team members, Division Chief Ed Crelin, Special Operations Lieutenant Steve Moews, Community Education Specialist/PIO Lieutenant Ed Beardsley and Paramedic Greg Tabeek, have arrived safely in Port Au Prince today and are communicating with the City's Fire Chief by satellite phone. The Team, which is expected to be on site for five (5) days, has been assigned by the United Nations to work alongside a search and rescue team from Nicaragua.

Each of the Firefighters maintains important emergency and specialized skills (i.e., Paramedic Training, Confined Space Rescue, Hazardous Materials Response, Rope Rescue, Dive Rescue and Trench Rescue) that are expected to be utilized and relied upon during this emergency rescue mission. It should be noted that Division Chief Crelin has participated in the emergency response for Hurricane Katrina and Wilma and his leadership will be invaluable.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Haiti during this difficult time," said Fire Chief David C. James. "Courageously, four of our firefighters volunteered to take on a brave mission and I ask our community to pray for their safe return."

In addition to the Special Operations Team, the City of Delray Beach has established nine (9) drop off locations throughout our community for emergency relief donations and supplies (i.e., food, water and basic supplies) to support earthquake victims. Further, the City has already begun to work with the American Red Cross, Missionary Flights International, Bethel Evangelical Baptist Church and Food for the Poor.

Haitian Earthquake Emergency Relief Initiatives

January 14, 2010: The City of Delray Beach, Florida, wants to express our deepest regrets to the citizens of Haiti as well as our Haitian community that are affected by the horrific and devastating earthquake that took place on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.

The City of Delray Beach is committed to supporting the emergency relief efforts for this major earthquake that shook the island and has already begun to work with the American Red Cross, Missionary Flights International, Bethel Evangelical Baptist Church and Food for the Poor. In addition, the City has established nine (9) drop off locations around the City to collect food, water and basic supplies to assist the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation (See Attached List of Drop Off Sites).

"Our Haitian community is critical to the cultural diversity of our City and this tragic event has affected our City as a whole. I have already experienced an outpouring of assistance from our residents and businesses and am hopeful that our entire community will unify to assist with these relief efforts," stated Ms. Lula Butler, City of Delray Beach Community Improvement Director who is leading the City's Haitian Earthquake Relief Initiatives.

The City of Delray Beach has established nine (9) drop off locations for emergency relief donations and supplies to support those victims of the major earthquake that rocked Haiti on Tuesday. The epicenter has been reported to be close to the capital of Port-Au-Prince and the quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks throughout a 10 mile (radius) area. This earthquake was the largest that has ever been recorded in the area and has caused unknown damage to the impoverished nation.

The Red Cross has estimated that three million people within ten miles of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake's epicenter in Haiti have been directly affected by this disaster. Local authorities are struggling to conduct rescue and recovery operations and, at this time, there is no estimate on how many people were killed. Haitian President Rene Preval has been referenced as saying that the death toll could be in the thousands.

Survivors have set up camps in the streets amid piles of salvaged goods, including food being scavenged from the rubble. Food and Water must be delivered quickly to ensure the safety of those victims. Also, due to communications being down, many of Delray Beach's Haitian community have not been able to confirm if members of their family and friends in Haiti have been affected.

CCR Sponsors Free Soccer Clinic

January 13, 2010: The Delray Beach Police Department's Coalition for Community Renewal is sponsoring a free community soccer clinic on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Hilltopper Stadium, 2501 Seacrest Blvd. The event, open to youth between the ages of 5 - 18 years, will be held from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm.

Professional coaches from Miami, members from the Delray Soccer League and players from Lynn University will instruct participants in various skills including passing, goal-keeping, trapping, drilling, speed, agility and scrimmages (shin guards and cleats are required). At the conclusion of the clinic, adult players will demonstrate soccer skills in exhibition games. Lunch and snacks will be provided to registered participants.

Road Closures: Atlantic Avenue will be closed from the east side of NE/SE 6th Avenue to Andrews Avenue at 4:00 am on January 16, 2010, and is scheduled to reopen by 7:00 pm on January 17th. Motorists are advised to use George Bush Boulevard or Linton Boulevard when traveling to/from Ocean Blvd/A1A and the beaches.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Promotes "Unity and Community"

January 7, 2010: The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum and the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center welcome the Delray Beach community to their annual breakfast celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 18, 2010, 8:00 am, at the Delray Beach Golf Club and Restaurant, 2200 Highland Avenue. The admission cost is $20 per adult and $10 per child and will be collected at the door. Guests are requested to R.S.V.P. no later than January 11, 2010.

This year's breakfast will feature Alberta Perry McCarthy as the keynote speaker. Ms. McCarthy is a former Delray Beach City Commissioner and Vice-Mayor and currently serves as the City's R.A.C.E. (Relationships between Authorities, Citizens and Experts) consultant. The event will also include the lighting of the unity candle and poetry readings by students participating in this year's Palm Beach Poetry Festival.

The Spady Museum also invites the community to visit the "Oh Freedom Over Me" exhibit through March 27, 2010. On loan from the Center of Documentary Studies at Duke University, this collection includes thirteen (13) documentary-style photographs, ten (10) photographic banners, video and film footage, depicting the work involved in the southeast United States to bring about voting and educational rights for African-Americans. Admission to the Spady Museum is $5 per adult and $3 per senior. Students and museum members are admitted free.

UNITED WAY OFFERS FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION

January 8, 2010: The United Way of Palm Beach County's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program provides free income tax preparation to local individuals or families with annual household incomes of $49,000 or less. This free tax service will be offered throughout the 2009 tax filing season until April 14, 2010, at Pompey Park and the Neighborhood Resource Center.

All VITA sites are staffed by volunteers who have been trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to prepare taxes using the VITA Program. Site information for City of Delray Beach VITA locations are listed below. Please note that both sites will be closed Monday, February 15th, in honor of Presidents Day.

New Start Date for Fire-Rescue CERT Training

January 8, 2010: Delray Beach Fire-Rescue is offering free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training to all Delray Beach residents and business owners. Participants will meet for eight (8) sessions beginning Wednesday, February 3, 2010, from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, at Fire-Rescue Headquarters, 501 West Atlantic Avenue.

Following a major disaster, CERT training provides citizens with the tools to effectively report hazardous situations and provide basic first aid in the event of a natural disaster and/or terrorist event until Fire-Rescue arrives. CERT uses a hands-on approach that teaches disaster response skills and also offers an excellent opportunity for volunteers to meet their neighbors.

January 4, 2010: Register your dance team today for the Dance Hip Hop Competition presented by the Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department's Diamonds and Pearls Dance Team. Registration cost for each team is $50.00.

This exciting competition will be held on January 23, 2010, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at Atlantic High School, 2455 W. Atlantic Avenue. Each Team will be judged on creativity, precision, appearance/costumes and overall performance and will have the opportunity to win one of three (3) top prizes. Girls Fast Pitch Softball League Now Taking Registration

December 17, 2009: Girls fast-pitch softball league starts in January at Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department's Pompey Park.

Girls ages 8 to 14 years old can sign up for one of two age divisions, 10 and under and 14 and under. The league will run from January 26, 2010 until April 2010 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Pompey Park Recreation Center, 1101 NW 2nd Street. Registration is $30 for Delray Beach residents and $35 for non-residents, and can be done online at MyDelrayBeach.com or in person at Pompey Park on Mondays through Fridays from 8:00am to 9:00pm or on Saturdays from 9:00am to 8:00pm.

Volunteers, background checks required, are also needed to coach and umpire.

Tee Ball League Starts in January at Pompey Park

December 18, 2009: The Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting a Tee Ball League at Pompey Park Recreation Center, 1101 NW 2nd Street, beginning January 25, 2010 and will end in March 2010. The cost to participate is $25.00 per player for Delray Beach residents and $30.00 per player for non-residents. Registration is now open and applications are accepted at Pompey Park, or register online at www.mydelraybeach.com under the Parks and Recreation Department.

This fun, entry level sport to baseball is open to girls and boys ages 4 to 7 years old. The League will be divided into two (2) divisions and all participants will learn to hit the ball off of a batting tee as well as other fundamental baseball skills. Practice for each Division will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. and games will be played on Saturdays.

December 17, 2009: The Delray Blazers Youth Travel Basketball Team invites all youth Basketball Teams to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Basketball Tournament at Pompey Park, 1101 NW 2nd Street. From January 15 through 17, 2010, all youth boys' basketball travel teams are invited to compete in this pre-season tournament. December 18, 2009: Ring in the New Year at First Night ® 2010, a non-alcoholic celebration of entertainment and activities for the entire family. Festivities begin at 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 31st in Downtown Delray Beach and continue through midnight.

First Night ® Buttons, which will serve as admittance to all First Night ® activities and venues, can be purchased for $10 in advance and $15 on New Year's Eve (December 31st). Buttons can be purchased in advance at the Famous 100-Foot Christmas Tree, the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Delray Beach Public Library, Delray News and Tobacco and Old School Square's Crest Theatre. Buttons will also be sold on the day of the event at various Downtown locations.

STREET CLOSURES
Atlantic Avenue will be closed from SE/NE 7th Avenue to Swinton Avenue from 2:00 pm until 2:00 am. The section of Atlantic Avenue between SE/NE 5th Avenue and SE/NE 7th Avenue however will reopen at approximately 10:00 pm. SE 2nd Avenue (south of Atlantic Avenue) and SE 4th Avenue (south of Atlantic Avenue) will be closed to alleyways by 7:00 am. Other side streets will be closed to alleyways beginning at noon. DOWNTOWN ROUNDABOUT MODIFIED SHUTTLE SERVICE
The Downtown Roundabout free shuttle bus service will run on a modified route during First Night ® (December 31, 2009) with service continuing until 1:00 am. Two buses, one originating at the Tri-Rail station on Congress Avenue and the other originating at the Delray Beach Public Library, will provide round trip shuttle service to the beach via Atlantic Avenue using detoured routes on NE/SE 1st Streets. Del-Ida Park Dedication Ceremony

December 15, 2009: The City of Delray Beach and the Public Art Advisory Board invite the public to the official dedication of the Del-Ida Eco Park entitled Ida's Cool Spot on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 6:00 pm. The Park is located at the intersection of NE 2nd Avenue (Pineapple Grove), NE 6th Street and Dixie Boulevard. Neighborhood resident Lois Brezinski designed the park in Del Ida, Delray Beach's oldest historic neighborhood.

The park features circular paths stamped with native animal paw prints, a labyrinth, native landscaping, colorful whimsical light posts and a curved bench made of reforested teak wood. At night, a lighting system in a colossal ficus tree shines downward, creating shadows as if a full moon is perennially shining on the little pocket park.

City Commissioners will present the opening dedication remarks and the community will participate in a free flower making "hands-on" activity. Refreshments will be served.

Hanukkah Candle Lighting Ceremony at Old School Square on December 11, 2009

December 10, 2009: A candle lighting ceremony marking the beginning of Hanukkah will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 5:00 pm on the grounds of Old School Square (corner of Atlantic and NE 1st Avenues). The ceremony will be conducted by Mayor Nelson S. "Woodie" McDuffie and Sandy Perlman, father of former Mayor Jeff Perlman. Other local elected officials are expected to attend.

Pat Brandano of Brandano Displays Inc., is donating the use of a 6' x 8' lit Menorah for this year's ceremony. The community is invited to attend.

New Start Time for Delray Beach Holiday Parade

December 7, 2009: The City of Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department and The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce are proud to announce that the Annual Delray Beach Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009, starting at a new time. The Parade will now start at 4:00 p.m. and will begin at Atlantic Avenue and Venetian Drive and will continue west to the Tennis Center.

In collaboration with First Night® New Year's Celebration, this year's theme is "Old Fashioned Holiday" with over 70 entries in the parade to help celebrate the holidays. Through a special connection to the North Pole, The City of Delray Beach Fire Department will have Santa riding along on their fire truck.

R.A.C.E. Relations Community Forum - December 9, 2009

December 2, 2009: The City of Delray Beach will hold its 2nd R.A.C.E. Relations Community Forum on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at 6:00 p.m., to complete the discussion and development of priorities on the City's R.A.C.E. initiative. All residents and interested parties are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at the Old School Square's Crest Theatre, located at 51 North Swinton Avenue.

R.A.C.E. - which stands for Relationships between Authorities, Citizens and Experts - is an initiative developed by City leaders in 2004 to engage the community in a proactive discussion on social and economic aspects that affect the quality of life for the City at large.

The meeting will consist of a structured forum designed to gather input from community stakeholders that are in attendance on several issues, including economic development, housing, environmental sustainability, accountability and transparency and inclusion/representation. This will be a follow-up to the most recent R.A.C.E. Relations Community Forum, held in October 2009. This meeting will continue to develop upon the identified community issues that were previously ranked and prioritized.

Veterans Park takes Day Trip Fairchild Botanic Gardens

December 1, 2009: Spend the day with the City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010. This Miami attraction has been open since 1938 and has assembled an outstanding collection of taxonomically arranged and well-documents tropical plants, emphasizing palm, cycads, flowering trees and shrubs, vices and fruit trees. Except for certain cultivated plants and critically endangered species, many of these plants were collected from the wild.

Cost for the trip is $50.00 per person for Delray Beach residents and $55.00 per person for non-residents and includes bus transportation, admission to the park, a 45 minutes tram tour and lunch. The bus will leave Veterans Park at 9:00 am and return at 5:00 pm. Advanced reservations and payments are required. Space is limited.

2009 SPRAB Awards

December 1, 2009: The Site Plan Review and Appearance Board (SPRAB) invites the community to its 18th Annual Awards Ceremony at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, during the Regular City Commission Meeting in City Hall Commission Chambers, 100 NW 1st Avenue.

Each year, SPRAB presents awards to the development team for exceptional projects completed during the previous fiscal year. The awards are given to those property owners and their design teams whose projects have significantly contributed to the beauty of the community through superior design. Honors were awarded based on the following categories: New Commercial Development, New Residential Development, New Downtown Commercial Development, Exterior Renovations, and Signage.

Boynton/Delray Holiday Boat Parade

December 1, 2009: The Boynton/Delray Holiday Boat Parade will take place on Friday, December 11, 2009. Beginning at 6:30 pm, decorated vessels will proceed from the Boynton Beach Inlet to the C15 Canal.

Between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, the George Bush Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue and Linton Boulevard bridges will be in the open position at various times while the parade travels south.

Participate in the City's Christmas Tree Recycling Program

December 1, 2009: The City of Delray Beach Litter Prevention Program is offering several "Drop Off Locations" for Christmas tree recycling for residences and business locations that DO NOT currently maintain "Vegetation" collection service. Multiple "Drop Off Locations" will be provided around the City to enable the recycling of real Christmas Trees. This free program will run from December 26th to January 11th.

SPECIAL NOTE: Single Family residences and business locations that DO maintain "Vegetation" collection service may also participate in this important recycling effort by placing Christmas Trees "curbside" on your scheduled pick-up day for vegetation. This "curbside" service will be offered at "no cost."

By participating in the City's Christmas Tree Recycling Program - either at the "Drop Off Locations" or "Curbside," residents and businesses will be contributing to a sustainable Delray and Palm Beach County. Real Christmas Trees are bio-degradable and by recycling them after Christmas, it can make a huge difference in reducing holiday waste. Instead of taking up space in the landfill and reducing our limited resources further, trees can be ground into mulch, which can be used to mulch gardens or parks or to prevent erosion at a local watershed. In fact, mulch and compost are offered FREE (at no cost) to all residents at the County's Solid Waste Authority, 7501 North Jog Road, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Atlantic High School Receives Funding to Create and Expand Classroom Libraries

November 30, 2009: The City of Delray Beach's Get Caught Reading program, Atlantic Community High School, and the Palm Beach County Education Commission are proud to announce that the high school has been awarded a grant in the amount of $40,000 from the Mary and Robert Pew Public Education Fund to create and expand classroom libraries. A major goal of this grant is to provide teachers with their own classroom libraries to improve student achievement and encourage a lifelong love of leisure reading.

The Get Caught Reading program will support core teachers at Atlantic Community High School to expand their knowledge of instructional and literacy strategies. Each classroom library will include a wide range of high interest books that students will want to read for pleasure while still meeting Sunshine State standards. As part of the Mayor's Literacy Initiative, a mentoring program will be implemented that will pair City employees and community members with struggling readers.

Sponsorships and donations are welcome to further this literacy effort. A $1000 sponsorship will provide classroom libraries with 250 books. Founded in 1998, the Mary and Robert Pew Public Education Fund was created as a supporting organization to the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties. The Fund supports initiatives that improve public education for economically disadvantaged children attending Palm Beach and Martin County schools through professional development for teachers, leadership development, and improving best practices in early childhood development. "The Night Before Christmas at Cason Cottage" Holiday Exhibit

November 25, 2009: The Delray Beach Historical Society (DBHS), together with the Woman's Club of Delray Beach, will present a special holiday exhibit, "The Night before Christmas at Cason Cottage" from December 3, 2009 through January 8, 2010. The cottage is located at 5 NE 1st Street and the exhibit will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm (See holiday schedule below). Admission to the exhibit is $4.00 per person.

Holiday gift items will be available for purchase on the porch of Cason Cottage. Gifts will also be sold next door at the historic 1926 Florida Bungalow, 3 NE 1st Street. The Bungalow is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. There is no admission charge to the Bungalow or the Cason Cottage "porch" gift shop.

Holiday Schedule: The Cason Cottage and Florida Bungalow will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, December 24th & 25th, and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, December 31st & January 1st. For more information, please call (561) 243-2577.

Delray Beach Holiday Parade Road Closures

November 24, 2009: The City of Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department and the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Delray Beach Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 12, 2009. At 4:00 pm, a procession of over seventy (70) floats will travel on Atlantic Avenue from Andrews Avenue & Gleason Street to NW 1st Avenue.

ROAD CLOSURES FOR DECEMBER 12, 2009
Road closure of Atlantic Avenue will begin at 2:00 pm to prepare for the parade route. Miramar, Lowery, Gleason Streets, Andrews Avenue and Venetian Drive will also be closed during this time. The streets will reopen at the conclusion of the parade.

US Swimming and US Masters Swimming Teams Come to Pompey Park Pool

November 24, 2009: The City of Delray Beach Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce their newest aquatic program, the East Coast Swimming US Swimming & US Masters Swimming at Pompey Park Pool.

Pompey swim team members are registered with Florida Gold Coast Swimming and their competition swim times are recorded at a national level. Swim team members are eligible to compete in local and national swim meets including Junior Olympics and Olympic competitions.

The US Swimming Team is open to girls and boys ages 5 years old and up. The US Masters Swimming is open to men and women 18 years and up. Swim practice is held Tuesdays through Saturdays from 3:30 to 6:00 pm at Pompey Park Pool located at 1101 NW 2nd Street Delray Beach (561) 243-7358. Swim team members unable to attend practice at 3:30 pm, the start time will be adjusted to accommodate school ending times.

Pompey Swim Coach, David Wright, is a holder of the American Swim Coaches Association Level 5 certification. This is their highest level of certification. Coach Wright has coached at the Barcelona Olympic Games and has placed athletes in the finals of three World Championships and two Pan Pacific Games. Since arriving in the United States four years ago, Coach Wright has coached six swimmers to national championships qualifying standard.

Toy Drive Brings Holiday Cheer to Local Children

Beginning November 19th, new unwrapped toys and store gift cards will be collected for deserving boys and girls ages 5 to 16 years. Drop off sites are located throughout the City and items will be accepted through December 16th.

For the past 19 years, Delray Beach merchants and residents have come together as a community to support this worthy effort. Through their generosity, thousands of children have experienced the caring spirit of the holiday.

Road Closures, Shuttle Service and Parking Facilities

During Famous 100 Foot Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
November 20 2009: Delray Beach will celebrate the holidays with the traditional 100 Foot Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 3, 2009. Festivities will begin at 4:45 pm with wonderful entertainment, outdoor skating, the holiday carousel and much more.

At 6:15 pm, spectators will gather at Old School Square, 51 North Swinton Avenue, to welcome the arrival of Santa Claus and witness the illumination of over 15,000 glistening holiday tree lights. The celebration continues in Downtown Delray Beach with Art & Jazz on the Avenue from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

ROAD CLOSURES
Beginning at 4:00 pm, East Atlantic Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from Swinton Avenue to Southeast 7th Avenue at the Intracoastal Waterway. Atlantic Avenue will reopen after 10:00 pm.

DOWNTOWN ROUNDABOUT SHUTTLE SERVICE MODIFIED ROUTE
The Downtown Roundabout free shuttle bus service will run on a modified route during the tree lighting ceremony with service continuing until midnight. Two buses, one originating at the Tri-Rail station on Congress Avenue and the other originating at the Delray Beach Public Library, will provide round trip shuttle service to the beach via Atlantic Avenue using detoured routes on NE/SE 1st Streets. PARKING FACILITIES
Parking fees, at a rate of $5 per vehicle, will be in effect from 4:00 pm until closing at the Robert Federspiel Parking Garage, South County Courthouse Parking Garage, Old School Square Parking Garage and the north parking lot of City Hall. Parking attendants accept cash only and will monitor the garages until the posted closing times.

November 20, 2009: The City of Delray Beach has 22 active Advisory Boards and Committees, each set up to perform specific functions. Citizen participation in local government is essential if we are to maintain the quality of life enjoyed in Delray Beach. All Board and Committee meetings are open to the public. The Advisory Board meetings scheduled for November 23rd - 27th are as follows:

11/23 - 6:00 pm, Public Art Advisory Board Meeting, Environmental Services Administration Building
11/26 and 11/27 - Thanksgiving Holiday, City Hall Closed

Donate Food & Supplies to Needy Families
November 20, 2009: This upcoming holiday season is an especially trying time for a lot of families. Many of the community's homeless population and others will feel the impact harder than ever.

Knowing this, the City of Delray Beach firefighters teamed up with the Caring Kitchen to provide food for twenty-five (25) local families in need. The City's firefighters contributed $1,000 toward the purchase of food and supplies for each of these families.

The City of Delray Beach and our employees are committed to helping the Delray Beach community through these difficult times. Some other important holiday community projects that are being undertaken by City staff include toy drives, food baskets & collections and the provision of care packages to our deployed military troops.

City Raised Public Awareness During Florida City Government Week

November 20, 2009: In an effort to raise public awareness about municipal government, the City of Delray Beach participated in Florida City Government Week - My City: I'm Part of It, I'm Proud of It from October 18-24, 2009. This program, which is sponsored by the Florida League of Cities, encourages municipalities around the state of Florida to promote the important role played by local government in everyone's life and to take an active part in promoting their city through civic education.

Many residents throughout the State are unaware of how city services impact their lives and how they contribute to enhancing their quality of life. In fact, statewide statistics show that 30 percent of Florida's residents are natives, while 70 percent moved here from somewhere else. This greatly affects a Floridian's understanding of state and local government.

During Florida City Government Week, the City hosted various activities and events to engage our younger residents to increase their awareness of municipal services and its framework and to raise greater civic consciousness among the students to become better citizens. The activities that were held included:

"Civic Brain Bowl" at Carver Middle School - The Brain Bowl was an academic competition in which more than 200 Carver students actively participated in the "Pre-Bowl Curriculum" that focused on learning about three (3) main subject areas: Florida Fun Facts, Who Runs the City and City Services & Departments. Twenty-five (25) of the students then went on to compete in the "Civic Brain Bowl" where they participated in teams and answered questions from the three (3) subject areas. Five teams competed and the "Blazing Brainiacs" prevailed. Overall the event proved to be highly successful and educational.

Mock City Commission Meeting at Carver Middle School - The students at Carver Middle School participated in a Mock City Commission meeting to provide them with firsthand knowledge on how government policies are determined. Seven (7) students assumed the role of Mayor, City Commissioners, City Manager and City Clerk. They considered a controversial Annexation Ordinance that would have permitted the development of a fast-food restaurant in a residential community. After a lengthy discussion, the Commission voted 3-2 to annex the site..the fast food was too much of a temptation! This event proved to have the most impact on the students' understanding of local government.

Guest Speaker at Carver Middle School - Lula Butler, the City of Delray Beach's long time Community Improvement Director, spent a morning speaking to the students at Carver Middle School on the various aspects of her job as well as the roles that other City departments play in providing services to our residents, businesses and visitors. This interactive discussion also included an exercise where the students were challenged to identify government-related services and how they benefit the community.

Florida City Government Week was developed as part of an ongoing effort sponsored by the Florida League of Cities (established in 1922) to help increase public awareness of municipal services and create a greater civic consciousness among the citizens of the state. The City of Delray Beach has participated in this project for almost two decades. In the past, the City has invited school-aged children to City Hall to shadow employees, hosted the Youth and Adult Residents Academies and scheduled Guest Speakers in local schools. Tennis Lessons with a Pro at Pompey Park Recreation Center

CITY OF DELRAY BEACHMEDIA RELEASE

November 13, 2009: Want to learn how to play tennis or even improve your game? Take "Lessons with the Pro" at Pompey Park Recreation Center.

Adult individuals and/or groups are invited to learn the fundamentals of tennis and/or just improve their game with a Professional Tennis Registry Certified instructor. Lessons are available Mondays through Thursdays, but must be made by appointment only.

Prices for individuals start at $15.00 for each half-hour lesson and increase up to $75.00 for a four (4) lesson package. Group costs are $40 per hour with a maximum of four (4) people per group. Participants are required to bring their own racquet.
